You know, going with your theory I think Charlie found Harvey's gun, like Jack's son did on Stargate, and accidentally shot himself. Harvey blamed himself, obviously, and his wife probably blamed him a little too and felt bad about it, and Harvey went into a depressive funk and just drank and drank until he met this younger nerd in glasses who wound up saving him and THEN THEY FOUGHT ALIENS TOGETHER AND BECAME A FAMILY THE END.
