In between prepping for Big Bang writing, I've been poking around a collection of Genesis games that we just picked up for the XBox. I started a new playthrough of Phantasy Star II, which I REALLY want to finish, because I've never managed to complete the game before.

Long story short; I was inspired by Robyn's Chrono Trigger game to name the party members after Atop the Fourth Wall characters!

Some choices are easy. The dagger-wielding, magic-using protagonist is LINK, of course.

One of the first party members you recruit is a buff monster hunter; I was going to name him HARV, but when you recruit him he tells you (paraphrased) "I have no special skills, but I'm good with a gun." After that, I of course had to name him NINE.

The other two male party members are a biologist with psychic techniques that damage organic creatures, and a mechanic with techniques that are useful against robots. I think they're going to be WAYN and OZZY, respectively.

Finally, there are three nameable female party members. Since AT4W is by and large a one-man operation, there aren't a whole lot of options here. One of the women on the team is a badass bounty hunter with wavy blond hair, so of course she's LIZ. The other two are a doctor who fights with scalpels and turns into your party's main healer, and a thief with an annoying habit of nicking items from shops and teleporting back to your home base. I think the thief could be MEG, possibly? Not sure what to name the doctor.

My action scenes may be shite right now, but as I write them more often they will get better.

Also, none of my action scenes have ever been as bad as the bit in Dragons: Lexicon Triumvirate where the guys are attacking the dragon who's reading a book and the dragon doesn't even look up and just holds out his fist and the guy runs into it.

The writing exercises I'm posting on my journal now are, in part, intended to see if I am capable of outlining a novel-length story (just the A plot - I'll try and add in hooks for B plots as I go) without pulling stupid plot contrivances out of my ass, without writing myself into a corner, and without stalling for years on end.

Like most snipes, I cannot help myself around glittery, iridescent objects. So when I stepped into our local Glittery Iridescent Object emporium, Cheapo Records, I figured I'd be walking away with more than I planned. I never expected to luck out as hard as I did, though!

My haul:
-The theatrical version of Dune. (Yes, I recently bought a certain iRiff.)
-The expanded, remastered version of Going for the One by Yes. One of the ones I didn't previously own!
-The Biggie: the eponymous 1984 release of Dead Can Dance. I have been looking for this thing for YEARS. This was the album they released before they really found their sound (gothy world-folk) so they sound more like other dark wave acts of the time, but you can hear them start to develop their trademark sound here. Got it for six bucks used!

Riff fodder, prog rock and used goth. Pretty much my ideal trip!
